Latsi Craft Market

Post by Dominic »

Paphos has a number of Craft Markets that pop up from time to time. The last one we went to was in Latsi, and we had our cameras with us to show you what we found...

Read the article and chat about it below...

Hmm....Latsi is in Nicosia. The market you are reffering to I believe is spelt Latchi.

This info. is from Wikipedia:-

Latchi (Greek: Λατσί), also spelled Lachi, Latsi and Lakki, is a small village that is part of the Polis municipality in Cyprus. It has a small harbour.

Seems that Latsi is part of Polis. :)

I can't believe you have been in Cyprus as long as you have without noticing that place name spellings are somewhat flexible.

Is it really said that way? That isn't how it's spelt in Greek. I've always thought 'Latchi' looks and sounds ugly, so I say it the other way. Am I doing it wrong?

Its their dialect and is how the locals pronounce Latsi, so I would say yes you are saying it wrong. Just like they say Bafos for Paphos and Beyia for Pegia, or Gili for Koili.

The reason it is spelt and refered to as LATCHI is to differentiate between LATSI in Nicosia and LATCHI in Polis.

That's rubbish, there are many villages with replicated names on the island like 2 Episkopi's that I know of and 2 Tremithousas neither are spelt differently.

The above mentioned market is taking place at the harbour just along the road from Polis Chrysochou going towards the Akamas Nature Reserve this Sunday 14th August from 0900 - 1300. For more information contact: 99 073 561.

Lincoln, why you not just admit that it is embarrassing not to know that Latsi is in the same community where you are living. There is no Latsi in Nicosia, however a Latsia (industrial area outside Nicosia)

By the way: locals pronounce Latchi : LA-Chi

The CH sound is a major difference between Greek and Cypriot Greek. For example, a Greek would say Tsada , how it is spelt. Cypriots say Chada.

Many place names on road signs that are in English are spelt all manner of ways (e.g. EMBA being EMPA), mainly due to a lack of skill in the relevant government department many years ago. If you want to know the correct pronunciation, then use the Greek spelling and pronounce that.

Emba, Empa, Lemba and Lempa. I wouldn't mind, but the two villages are right next to each other!
