Thule Bike Rack and Towbar

Post by Anarita John »

I have recently bought a new electric bike. My original electric bike in Cyprus was fine for riding locally and coped with the hills between Anarita, Nats and Choletria fine, but I kept getting error messages that the motor was overheating in the mountains.

New bike was purchased in Limassol at Bikehub. Bike was loaded onto my old bike rack, a strap on one, but on the way back the whole of the rack had slipped at least 2cm.

In the UK I have a Thule bike rack which fits on a towbar, so that is what I wanted here in Cyprus. Trip to the Honda dealer, sorry, could not help, but suggested the motor ascessory shop at the top end of the Polis Road. They didn't fit them. Our own mechanic told us to get a Witter one imported from the UK.

A few internet searches, and we found a place in Limassol that fitted towbars so we went to investigate. A small shop that specialises in car lighting. Thay had a display of towbars. They were knowlegable about Thule bike racks, even though they were not stockists and said they could get one for me. I paid roughly the same price as amazon de for a brand new boxed one. A shop in Nicosia wanted €300 more.

The shop I got the towbar from is Xenon Lights, 15E Spyrou Kyprianou, Limassol. Dimitris fitted the towbar and electrics in just over two hours, whilst we went to the Alpha Mega and IKEA shopping centre. Very easy to find, get off the highway at the Troodos turnoff. Down onto the roundabout and then the exit that takes you to the left of Alpha Mega. Straight on, through a set of lights and crossing, then right at the lights, opposite a tyre place. Xenon is almost next door to the tyre place.

Really pleased with the service and the neat job Dimitris has done. I had visions of the bumper having to be cut to fit it.

So now I can go on bike rides, safe in the knowledge that if anything untoward happens, I can get back home safely. Also I won't just be limited circular rides.

Why aren't you limited to circular rides? Surely you must start and end at the car?

Yes, will have to go and get a number plate at the motor ascessory shop on the Polis Road, remembering to take the log book with me, unlike the UK where my mechanic just made one up on his premises.

In reply to Dominic, In Cyprus I have already cycled from Anarita to St George's and then back to Coral Bay, where Rosemary picked me up. I was on my mountain bike so it went in the boot(just). I would love to ride around the Akamas but it would be a long ride for me from Anarita, so Rosemary could take me to St George's and I could ride around around the Akamas to Polis, where she could pick me up. If I decided to ride around the Paphos coast, I could do a bit at a time, being dropped off, me riding and then being picked up.
