I recently posted a warning to people on Paphos Chat about the dangers of off road driving in the Akamas with Quads and Buggies. They have very narrow wheel bases which makes them unstable and at times hard to control. This accident isn't the first and won't be the last.

What a terrible thing to happen. Coming here on holiday, having a good time then tragedy strikes. Hopefully his daughter will pull through.

Also wonder if he was double vaccinated.

I read on line this morning that it was a French father (59) and daughter (20) who were in Cyprus on holiday. Sadly other members of the family were following them. It also implied that they had all rented beach buggy or all terrain type vehicles. A really sad accident, the father has since died, and his daughter is injured and in hospital....

The latest statement from the Press (PaphosLife) concerning that accident....

"Five fatal accidents with six dead have occurred on the very dangerous road of the area "Kakoskali" near the Baths of Aphrodite in the last six years.

The community of Neos Chorio and other organized groups in the area have called for the widening of the road and the installation of a safety railing, a request which has provoked reactions from government departments and environmental organizations.

In another fatal accident yesterday, a French tourist of Jewish origin lost his life. The mayor of Neos Chorio demanded the immediate intervention of the Attorney General of the Republic in order to identify those involved in the delay in taking effective measures for the very dangerous road in "Kakoskali".

The Ecologists' Movement also claims responsibility, claiming at the same time that the rough widening projects that took place last year have created a bigger security problem in the area.

It is noted that with the implementation of the management plan of Akamas next year, the main roads of the park are planned to be paved with concrete and paved with stone from the area while it is planned to close paths that are currently abused by wheeled vehicles.
Yesterday's fatal accident that killed 59-year-old French national Sebagh Gerald Andre was the fifth in a row in the last six years. His 20-year-old daughter, who was driving the buggy vehicle that ended up on the cliff 150 meters deep, is being treated at Paphos hospital out of danger. "

I believe the girl was panicking when she realized that her buggy topples over to the side and did the wrong decisions.

It happened to me at the same spot, many years ago, when my passenger jumped out of the car to do a photo and my car (Mini Moke) started to topple towards the steep cliff. I started shouting to him: back in the car, quick... and luckily it was in time before car turned over completely.
I learned my lesson and never stopped at this spot again in the following years, however I enjoyed many times the tour from Bath of Aphrodite to the Blue Lagoon. The only dangerous moment that time ( 1978-1997) was when another car came from the opposite on this track (4km), but that happened very very rare, perhaps 2-3 times from 30 trips. Reversing the car in some places was really difficult though...

On this map from the area one can see that only a few dangerous spots are there where the road is close on the brink of the cliff and could be easy secured...

It's not only a few spots. ALL of it is dangerous to buggy/quad drivers as the cliffs are steep and the roads provide little traction. Also spare a thought for the pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders who are regularly forced off the path by idiots in motor vehicles that they cannot control! They are the real victims, not selfish and incompetent drivers who find themselves out of their depth.

The road has already been made a lot less bumpy than it was.

I once was stopped out side a rental shop, when a man and lady got on a couple of quads, they started them up, and like a bat out of hell, the lady shot across the road, just missing on coming traffic, and smashed into a parked van, she flew off, no helmet, claret everywhere, I was the one that called for the ambulance, Im guessing it was her first time on a quad, and just shows how inexperienced drivers are an accident waiting to happen.

Perhaps it's time the whole of Akamas, listed as a World Heritage site, was returned to its natural state and left to get on with it.

Keep all motorised vehicles well and truly away.

It would be difficult to do that though as fire fighting vehicles need to get through urgently when needed

This type of Mini Moke I drove 45 years ago also in the Akamas when the incident happened I mentioned in my post above. Much much safer than nowadays buggys. As it had much larger wheels than on this photo I could actually drive everywhere I wanted. Funny was that I had to check with a little piece of wood, how much fuel is left by opening the lid one can see on the side of the chassis. I remember that I run out of fuel one evening at Panayia village when I returned from a tour to Troodos, but managed to buy 1/2 liter petrol at a mini market there. It was enough to reach Latchi where I rented a room... what a fun that was :)

I dearly wish they would ban the quad bikes from there too, years ago it was one of our favourite walks very peaceful but these riders spoil it now. You have to jump out of their way, they are noisy and don't get me started on the huge cloud of dust they leave in their wake, its horrible and most don't attempt to slow down when they pass to try and reduce it as they don't have a clue.

That's a good joke... The road (track) from Aphrodite's Bath to the Blue Lagoon is used from thousands of locals in their holidays to reach one of their favourite places: Blue Lagoon, specially this weekend. No way that this access can be closed for good. One can widen the road further and in some places to secure it with metal bars, which is already planned from the local Authorities.

Here a screen shot from the plateau above Blue Lagoon from last summer, even with Covid and less tourists, full of cars and buggies.

By the way: it is new to me that Akamas is listed as a World Heritage site

Tourism
Akamas has branded itself as an exclusive destination and tourists who come tend to be seeking more than "sun, sea and sand", being more interested in culture, biodiversity and specialist sports such as golf or hiking.

Golf???
