In this film we take a bumpy but scenic journey through some of the abandoned villages near Lysos, Cyprus. Since the Turkish invasion of 1974, Turkish Cypriot communities were repatriated in the North of the island, while Greek Cypriot communities were moved South. Some of the villages that were emptied had poor infrastructure, lacking electricity and a decent infrastructure. These soon became abandoned and left to nature. It is fascinating to explore the ruins, but any visit is tinged with sadness.
If you choose to do this route yourself, be advised that a 4x4 is required. You should also not attempt it after heavy rain, as the roads can soon turn into quagmires.
If you have a regular car, you can still visit Melandra, the first village we pass through here. The road up to that point is good for all cars.
