Paphos SODAP Beaches and Sea Front - After Lockdown

Post by Dominic »

This is a quick film we made this afternoon. I took the new camera out for a brief stroll by the SODAP beaches. The new cafe is coming along nicely. I also filmed the sea front briefly, so you can see what it is like after lockdown. More places were open, but there weren't many people about. presumably they were all in queues for their antigen test.

We shall be doing more walkabout films in future. This was just a little experiment to see how they came out, and I am pleased with how the camera coped with my walking.

There is no accompanying map for this film, but you can find out more about the beach here:

I went on a walk from Phaethon Beach Hotel, Gerriskipou Beach, to the harbour and back yesterday. Quite a few of the hotels open and busy with tourists from Israel, Russia and EU countries. Met a couple from France, who were very surprised that there were no British tourists until I explained that if they came, they would have to quarantine on return.
The Louis Imperial was still closed, as was the Ledra Beach, which was undergoing renovations. However the Phaethon Beach was open, as was the new Louis Hotel. At present, until today, the Phaethon Beach has been used for the cruise ships crew.

The new taverna complex is nearing completion. It looks as if they are trying to make the beach area slightly bigger by taking away some of the cliff.

Thanks for the photos John and Dominic. It's nice to see hotels along the eastern end of 'hotel row reopening, Almost got used to a long winter/ spring period of empty hotels, sun beds all piled up out side the buildings. The only living thing we encountered on our walks was a series of plaintive hotel cats, each coming towards us on the path from their respective closed up hotel. So its good to see the sun beds out again waiting for tourists to fill them!
I hope that the concrete structure on the beach will look better when its finally finished!
Personally. i prefer the 'Deck' situated in a natural setting. Hope it reopens!

Did the same walk today, again late afternoon. A couple of the hotels which usually cater for the more sedate visitor were full of what looked like 18/30 holidaymakers. No social distancing and a long line queing at the outside bar for drinks. Also no masks whilst queuing and groups spilling onto the footpath so I turned around.

Oh dear! Cyprus is relying on tourists following the health protocols which they should have been given on arrival. I suppose that hotel staff can only do so much to ask the guests to wear masks and to socially distance themselves..
i hope that some of these tourists won't get or transmit the virus.

Actually, WHO guidelines don't even mention masks outside any more.
