Cabinet to decide on Wednesday whether to lift total lockdown next week

Post by memory man »

Cabinet on Wednesday will consider three possible scenarios as regards the next steps following the end of the current total coronavirus lockdown on Sunday, Philenews reports.

The most likely decision to be announced, possibly on Wednesday, is the lifting of the total lockdown and return to restrictive measures that were in effect in Cyprus before April 26, according to insiders.

The second scenario, but highly unlikely – provides for the extension of the total lockdown for another week and the third is the implementation of an intermediate solution.

That is, the reopening of specific sectors of trade and the economy in general and the return of students, at least to some degree, to classes.

This scenario is also unlikely to be approved by Cabinet because end of year exams are just around the corner and students cannot afford staying away from classes much further.

Over the past couple of days, the Health Ministry has processed the proposals tabled by the island’s epidemiological team on the new measures that will be enforced after the lockdown is lifted.

Insiders appear positive that the country will exit lockdown next week but refused to confirm this.

Fewer cases were traced in the previous days as significant number of tests were carried out since the lockdown startted, especially over the Easter weekend.

The daily positivity rate had stabilized at around 1.3 to 1.4 per cent, while the daily tally of cases dropped from approximately 900 to 600 before Easter.

However, the number of covid-related deaths has increased significantly over ht past couple of days.

Let's hope the hot weather will again work it's magic. Certainly the majority of parties I witnessed were all outside and the large groups on the beach on each day of the holiday were also at least outside but with no social distancing as always. Still the latest research in the USA is more and more now saying you have to be incredibly unfortunate to catch the virus in the open air. In fact thee seems to be no cases of any large infections from outdoor events and infections were only caused by people moving inside like at Cheltenham races .
I for one would certainly welcome an ice cold beer or three at a beach bar next week .

Well Wednesday is slowly edging to it's closure, and I have yet to see any new ideas about the Covid Rules

The cabinet on Wednesday night decided to reopen most closed businesses and to introduce a so-called Coronapass for people to be allowed into hospitality venues, churches, gyms, and other places starting Monday, while keeping an overnight curfew.

A Coronapass entails either having a 72-hour-old negative PCR test for Covid or having received at least one dose of a vaccine three weeks earlier or having contracted the virus in the past six months.

A curfew will remain in force between 11pm and 5am with the following exceptions: travelling to and from work; visiting a medical centre or hospital or pharmacy or vet for an emergency; no need to send a text for permission before going out.

Schools will reopen with physical presence with pupils having to submit to a weekly rapid antigen test. Gymnasium, lyceum, and certain primary school years would have to present a 72-hour-old test on the first day, May 10.
