An oil refinery in Paphos was up in flames on Friday night with four fire trucks on the scene until the fire was out, spokesman for the service Andreas Kettis said on Saturday.

The incident took place at 10:30pm at the Ayia Varvara industrial zone. The premises suffered extensive damage, including the factory offices and oil processing area, though oil deposits were salvaged.

According to a forestry department announcement, it appears this was a case of arson.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Kettis said that the area is surrounded by a number of other factories and farms however the fire services prevented the spread of the flames.

Paphos police also went to the scene with experts who deemed it was too dangerous to enter the premises. It was decided that some precautionary measures should be taken on the roof for safety so that experts can access the scene and begin investigations.

Sounds like it. I also read on In Cyprus, that this factory was mainly constructed with metal sheeting and plastic.. so no wonder if got very hot when the fire inside it started. However, the fire brigade were able to stop it spreading to oil storage tanks near by. Which was a blessing as the fire didn't spread to nearby farms.
