Amazon UK “Import Fees Deposit”

Post by MacManiac »

Since the beginning of the year we have not used Amazon UK, Cotton Traders, Lakeland or any of our other UK suppliers because of the uncertainty and lack of clarity regarding Import Fees, and hence unknown costs. Today I have been trying to find a new keyboard for my iPad and decided upon a “Logitech SLIM FOLIO iPad Keyboard Case 10.2 Inch (7th Generation)”. I checked online and Amazon UK came up, and I read through the reviews. So far, so good.

Checking to see whether it could be delivered to Cyprus (battery issues) I found that it could. I proceeded to the Checkout and thought delivery was reasonable, but came across an additional charge of €15,43 for an Import Fees Deposit.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/custom ... 0&pop-up=1

This appears to be an Amazon estimate of the import duties that may be levied. I wonder whether anyone has experienced this or has knowledge of it. I checked with Amazon.de but their version comes with an Austrian and German keyboard layout unfortunately.

If you check your order details it should not include any UK vat. The import fee deposit should be 19% of the total price inc shipping which is paid to Cyprus. This alleviates any fees to pay at the post office and therefore no additional collection fee (currently €3.50).

If UK vat is still charged then that probably means the seller has not set up his A/C correctly and you will have to pay the VAT both ends if you decide to go ahead with the order.

I looked at the site but there is no English version. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Bizarrely I get better delivery from amazon.es, even though it gets sent via Germany. Work that one out.

There is no logic to how Amazon works... I ordered something from the UK site only to be told they don’t ship to Cyprus. I ordered the same item from DE and they shipped it to Cyprus.... when I tracked it, it went from the same place in the UK as my original order to Germany and then to Cyprus.

I used Amazon DE to buy some coin shaped batteries. Postage was free and they came from the Channel Isles

Thanks to all for your advice. I downloaded Chrome on my iPad and translated the Amazon Spain site. All well and good until I discovered the keyboard they were selling (not unsurprisingly) was a Spanish keyboard. It looks as if it will be Amazon UK after all. I suppose 19% is bearable and thanks to panoscouse for the explanation. I did contact Brian at Computer SOS but he does not stock the keyboard. He contacted Logitech and they could not guarantee a delivery date.
