Has anyone had Carpel Tunnel surgery here in Cyprus.

Post by trevnhil »

As the title suggests i am looking for people who have had carpel Tunnel Surgery here in Cyprus. I have been diagnosed with this affliction and wonder whether to have the operation to 'cure' it or to manage with the discomfort.. Out of 6 stages i have been diagnosed with stage 3
The doubts i have at the moment are because it is not sever at the moment. I have no idea if it will get worse. I also don't know what problems i will have in daily life after having an operation.

So if anyone out there would like to enlighten me either on here if they don't mind sharing with all the members, or by sending me a PM..

Don’t know about availability of surgery in Cyprus but my wife had this surgery done in the UK about 20 years ago and after the surgery she said it felt no different for months after as it depends on how long the nerve has been trapped but it did improve over time and does not bother her at all now. However she was told that not having it done would mean it would get worse and the use of her fingers and thumb would diminish – Starts as tingling then severe pins and needles then numbness and slowly takes away you ability to feel things and pick things up.
I would have thought you have nothing to lose by having the surgery if you can find someone to do it as the end result if it is left will be the loss of of use of your hand. I believe the surgery involves drilling a hole alongside the nerve to release the pressure - Nerves do not recover easily – I cut through the nerve on the inside of the last joint on my left index finger 5 years ago and have had numbness for 4 years and only now can I feel things with it again and the numbness is fading.

My wife had both wrists done over 20 years ago here in Cyprus, she was in a bad way, always numb, both a success and no problems since.

Many thanks to both of you. I know nothing about it at all and had the diagnosis yesterday.. It is in the early stages so only pins and needles, but classed as stage 3 out of 6..
So the more information I can gather the better, and first or second hand experiences are better than 'Google'
Any more views would be very welcome, and as I say even by PM

I haven’t had carpel tunnel surgery but did have some tendons reattached about 5 years ago and recently a cortisone injection for trigger thumb. Both of these procedures were carried out by Konstantinos Kritiotis at the Iasis, he is an excellent specialist hand surgeon who has worked in both Cornwall and at Salford Royal where he worked until last year, splitting his time between Cyprus and the UK until Covid put a stop to commuting, I would always recommend him and he is in Gesy

Thanks for that info Sue. It is very relevant because the referral for test was made by the Rheumatologist... at the Iasis.. So it seem that when i see my consultant in a few weeks he may well get me to see Dr Kritiosis..

Dr Kritiotis still in business?, good on him, he did my full hip replacement 20 years ago at the Iasis, have to say he did a great job as far as I am concerned, on the other hand I had a TURP procedure last year at the most popular private hospital and was a complete failure in fact it made my problem far worse, also I had to pay for it to be done.

Good luck Trev.

The Doctor Kritiotis who did your hip replacement would be Phillipos who is still "in Business" but Konstantinos is his son.

Hi Trevor,

I had Carpel Tunnel Surgery in both palms by a Hand Surgeon in Scotland many years ago and very successfully. I have since had Steroid Injections and Surgery for Trigger Finger in both hands at the St George Hospital in Paphos - again very successfully, by Dr Georgios Efremis, an Orthopaedic Surgeon. My friend, has had surgery by Dr Nicandrous at The Blue Cross very successfully for Carpel Tunnel. Good Luck. Ruth xx

Can also recommend Dr George Nicandrou at Blue Cross for hand and wrist ailments and surgery in 2011 has left me with a fully functional left hand.
Alas I now have a major problem with the joint at the base of my right thumb and we are at the stage where he is managing the situation using hyaluronic acid injections into the joint.

Thank You for the additional input from people. I am in the very early stages having only had a diagnosis this week.. I is around 5 weeks before i see the doctor that referred me.. I imagine at that time he will refer me again to someone who if needed can do the operation..

Thanks Tanny I had certainly wondered about that.. As you may expect I have been looking at info on the internet and it does say if you don't have a general anaesthetic you can drive home..
However, I think it was an American site and almost all of their cars are automatic..
But certainly that would be one of the questions I would be asking before any operation.

At the moment I am looking for a left wrist Carpal Tunnel Splint.. I can see them on Amazon DE but the delivery time is around 3 weeks :-(

I use Tassos Pharmacy in Chloraka and was able to get two suitable splints there - the lady was very knowledgeable and had a wide range of splints for hands and wrists, so suggest you have a look at the pharmacies as most have a section for this type of product. It is very important you get the correct size, even though they have adjustable straps.

That was after the operation.

Thanks Tanny. I did realise the mistake :-) i am appreciative of everyone's input as it is all more knowledge for me.. It will be 4 or 5 weeks before I get to discuss this with my consultant.

Another suggestion regarding the carpal tunnel splint is to ask a physiotherapist - not only for advice as to which may be the best design for you but may be able to get one (and possibly cheaper than if you buy at a pharmacy). No harm in asking for a demonstration of a few 'home exercises' too!

The only snag I see there is that means getting yet another referral. And what the Physio says may be at variance with what the Neurologist says.. I will wait to see what is suggested in 4 weeks or so..
But it is good that there is a surgeon in the hospital that I am already seeing a consultant..

Well I am also being treated (successfully) for Rheumatoid Arthritis, but I have never been advised to 'rest' . I have been doing the gardens and 5 dog walks a day..
