I know in 2003 when I brought a vehicle into Cyprus they then wanted £14,500 duty on a 2.5 litre engine so looks like they're going back to the old rules.

A number of people got stung with Duty Free cars around that time. I bought one in 2003 for 8K Cypriot from a well known local dealer who assured me it was duty free only to be informed a short time after in the media the rules were changed and whiles bought in a certain period had to be put in bond So a few months later after purchase I had to pay 8K Cypriot duty based on engine and wheel base size so I could take it out of Bond.

Yes, I seem to remember the problems with getting a car out of bond. Instead of buying a new car in UK and having it shipped out here, we decided to buy our new cars from dealers in Paphos.Though we later discovered that if selling a duty free car, we still had to pay back duty charges pro rata, depending on the age of the car when sold!

Lloyd, according to our accountant a lot of the bigger dealers were bringing in cars for a couple of years and storing them to buy themselves a bit more time.

Morning.
I have had several motors of all types including our latest model a three year old Suzuki Escudo (Vitara) all have been pre owned from Japan who I believe have a three year law and must be moved on, Cyprus mainly deals with that market as far as I am aware, unless you are looking for something special but their are local specialist dealers selling up market super 4x4s, Range Rover and the like, I have when we first arrived like many others bought a duty free CRV about the year 2001 eventually we had to pay back the duty, not really a good deal, motors here now are as UK pricing, not that much in it, also when you sell you get that slightly higher price back normally, I now use just the one dealer who sell's 90% Jap imports no doubt I will be changing again in a year or so.....God willing

Customs duty anywhere is always based on what customs think is the value. If you have a proper invoice they will usually accept it but if you have a "cheap" invoice they will probably dismiss it. They get their valuation usually by looking online, the same as the rest of us.
