You may be aware that the 50 euro note has been redesigned and is now in circulation. The old notes remain valid and the two will circulate together for the time being. However, many of the machines that retailers have, that check for forgeries, don't recognise the new notes and signal accordingly. It would seem that retailers haven't been made aware of this.

One thing that annoys me about the cashpoints here is how keen they are to give you 50 euro notes.

It hasn't been announced, but they have stated that notice of the date will be given "well in advance". Even after they have been withdrawn they will retain their value for ever. However, you would then have to take them to a central bank to exchange them.
