This is one of the main reasons we support the idea of a Paphos - Polis motorway. It will encourage the younger generation to keep the villages going.

I think the problem of the decreases in population in the more distant villages from the nearest town isn't only on the Laona Plateau where most of these villages are found, as it also extends to many of the 'hill villages' in the Troodos area. It seems to be a fact of modern life that as children grow up they usually have to go to Gymnasiums and Lyceums in the nearest town for their secondary education. From there some go on to higher education and many others want to do office, shop work or to train for their future career. Many young Cypriots have much less interest in hard manual work that their parents used to do.
Whether building a highway there would make a real difference or not would have to be seen.
