I read a few weeks ago that due to the reduced level of pollution/smog emissions due to lockdowns and reduced activity etc it would in effect made earth temperatures rise as more direct sunlight is reaching the earth
It seems to be showing signs of this in Cyprus where the temperature for July was a the highest for 37 years

Another side effect of Covid-19
Re: Another side effect of Covid-19
Short term it will have an effect. But read to the end of the article before throwing a few tyres on the fire.Mirek wrote: ↑Tue Aug 04, 2020 3:29 pm I read a few weeks ago that due to the reduced level of pollution/smog emissions due to lockdowns and reduced activity etc it would in effect made earth temperatures rise as more direct sunlight is reaching the earth

Re: Another side effect of Covid-19
I am having doubts about the Cyprus meteorological service. If I remember correctly, they have about 40 weather stations scattered round the island, each measuring temperature, humidity and all the other variables. It seems to me strange that the peak forecasts and measurements are usually related to Athalassa, which is not situated in the concrete jungle of Nicosia, which I would expect to have the highest temperatures, abounding in concrete and tarmac. Many of their forecasts have even been 1° C higher than the measured temperatures.
Having 3 1/2 weather stations in my garden, I know perfectly how difficult it is to get accurate temperature measurements. In my own case, there are many errors possible due to equipment design and placement. These are usually limited to better than ± 0.5° C but occasional variations may even be higher. I rely most on a practically new calibrated weather station with dynamic temperature measurement. I have a similar station with static temperature measurement. At night, when there is no solar radiation, these two stations track perfectly within their tolerances. During the day, any strong wind could change the measured temperature of the static system, simply because the wind makes it similar to a dynamic system. If it is calm and bright sunshine, the static system will read higher than the dynamic by anything from 0.1 to 2° C. In reality, nobody can measure air temperature with any degree of certainty; pretty close, yes but not quite!

Re: Another side effect of Covid-19
I don't worry about their forecasts as they usually only apply to Nicosia and inland areas.
Its usually about 6c cooler than that in Paphos and much more humid in summer. I use <weatherunderground.com> for the Paphos forecast which is much more accurate. It gives, temperatures by the hour, wind direction and strength, and the degree of humidity...

I think we all have our favourite weather sites for our own locality
