The traffic Police in Limassol (and presumably the rest of Cyprus) appear to have number plate reading facilities fitted on a number of Police vehicles, they are often at vantage checking/stopping point around Limassol town.
The computer checks documents (tax, insurance, D/L and MOT) so they know whom to stop, thus taking the guess work out of stopping vehicles.
