Supermarket trollies
Why do Lidl & Papantoniou charge for using a trolley
&
Phillipos & Sklavenitis do not charge
I don't know about Alpha Mega.

Re: Supermarket trollies
Alpha Mega don't charge either. A handy tip though, keep a British 2p coin to hand, they work in trolleys here, and you will always have it because obviously it can't be spent here!
Re: Supermarket trollies
Part of the trouble is that a trolley can be converted to a barbeque fairly easily.

Re: Supermarket trollies
What do you mean by "charging"? Don´t you get your coin back? Usually at Lidl you can even ask for a plastic chip which replaces the coin.

Re: Supermarket trollies
It's to stop people leaving them everywhere. If they want their coin back, they have to put the trolley back where it belongs. Simple !

Re: Supermarket trollies
So, why don't Sklavenitis, Alph Mega & Phillipos
have coin operated trollies.
They don't seem to be "left everywhere" at these stores.

Re: Supermarket trollies
Think whether a supermarket locks its trollies or not may depend on its location. At one time in Paphos sometimes people who lived fairly close by sometimes trundled their trollies back home carrying their shopping. Usually, I think they weren't returned to the store. Also other trollies were abused and became unusable. Anyway, since once you've returned your trolly to its place, you can get your coin back.

Re: Supermarket trollies
Actually I have seen trolleys abandoned in the car park at Sklavenitis and on the waste ground next to Alpha Mega. These two shops also employ someone to go round collecting them from time to time. I'm all in favour of using a refundable coin if it means people will return trolleys to the store.

UK 10 pence piece works for me.

Re: Supermarket trollies
I have a plastic 'trolley token' which was given to me by one of the supermarkets Which works just as well!

On eBay you can buy a device which fits on your key ring, and it will release supermarket trollies without the need for a coin.
Re: Supermarket trollies
I am not sure that anyone needs to buy a 'coin' .. Put a euro in when you get the trolley, take it out when you return it... Cost.. Zero..
Trev..

Wow! It has taken 16 posts to arrive at the conclusion that, where it is required, you can get your money back. It is a pity that there are not any more important things to discuss.
Re: Supermarket trollies
I have one of those and if inclined it is possible to remove the token once the trolley is removed from the trolley park.

A couple of years ago a promotional gift from some pharmacies with a similar device was given to customers at Christmas.
I have even been offered a €1 coin by a person to save her having to go to the trolley park to fetch a trolley and can remember offers by other people to return my trolley to the trolley park - presumably so they could pocket the coin as a 'thank you'.
So you see, this topic has in fact turned out to be quite informative.
