Just a reminder folks. Tomorrow is a Public Holiday and shops will more than likely be closed.

Re: Public Holiday
The law states that general shops (i.e. not bakers, kiosks etc) have to close tomorrow. If paps open then they risk a fine, not for the first time.

Re: Public Holiday
This sounds like a Cypriot April Fool joke, to be perfectly honest! On a SATURDAY, when all Banks, Schools, Government Offices, etc are shut down anyway?
What is the name of this Public Holiday, which is so important that ROC Gov also needs to shut the shops down, when this is the only day of the week when many working peeps can actually get out to do their weekly shop?
Can understand this on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day, as peeps prepare for this in advance, but All Fools Day? They're having a larf, surely?
Cheers- AL

Re: Public Holiday
Just for AL
It always struck me as really bad (and weird) when the Cypriot public holidays fell at the weekend - especially as those of us who were working didn't get the day off in lieu in respect of said public holiday. I, for one was very miffed indeed in thinking "I woz robbed".... but hey, we got more public holidays in Cyprus than we did in UK so it was something I learned to live with.
This time of year used to mostly give us 3 public holidays in a row, one week apart - always loved that one, especially if it landed on a Monday! But never on a Friday, as I switched that to one of my days' off in 2015 when I negotiated down to a 4 day working week
But, a bit about the holiday here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EOKA#Armed_campaign
Not the best of days to go about shouting about ones' "Britishness"

The World isnt going to stop if shops close for a whole whopping day, think about the shop workers who will be able to spend time with their family.....good for them.

A fascinating historical read thanks, Jules! Whilst I was only approaching my teens during this tragic period, I do remember it, but with the news always slanted to the HMG / MoD perspective, of course...PhotoLady wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2017 9:31 pm Just for AL

One item in your wikilink baffles me, though. It mentions the 1960 Independance agreement as preserving TWO Sovereign Base Areas at Akrotiri and Dhekelia. What about Episkopi (and Happy Valley) to the northwest of RAF Akrotiri? Where did that fit into the SBA equation?

Re: Public Holiday
I'm not certain AL but I sort of get the impression it's classed with Akrotiri for some reason.
I found this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akrotiri_and_Dhekelia
But, this made for an interesting read too: https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/un ... -episkopi/
