BANK THEFT

Post by Lofos-Jan »

I have a client based in the UK who had a very significant sum of money stolen from his Cyprus Bank account in the last few weeks. This involved a hack of his personal email and a 'rule' being entered into his Hotmail settings which redirected all emails from the Cyprus bank to a Yandex email address (both the general email address and the bank manager's personal address with whom he usually corresponded). The bank had believed they were corresponding with him. He had requested a statement for his tax return which he did every year but which was obviously forwarded onto the hackers. He phoned the bank to query why it had not been sent and therefore discovered the fraud. We are not sure at this point whether they then managed to establish internet banking (which he has never had) or how it was done but they made transfers between the deposit and current account then made 3 different swift payments (for 'property renovation!') to clear out the account.

My advice is to be vigilant as this won't be a one off, check your account regularly if you have online banking and check your email settings to make sure you have no 'rules' set up for redirection of any of your emails.
