Don't know if a detached retina is the same, but my wife had a torn retina in the uk, she had noticed a problem with the vision and rang the optician who called her in immediately, diagnosed it, contacted the hospital and sent her straight up where they were waiting for her. Laser was used to staple/stitch the damaged section back. They said it needed to be done quickly so pressure of the fluid didn't force it further away from the back of the eye. 15minutes later and we were on our way.

You need to know that whoever does the repair has a history of success and a lot of experience of doing the repair – My friend of 40 years woke up one morning and thought he had gone blind in one eye in the UK it was a detached retina - He went for counselling before the op and asked all kinds of questions – He was told by the specialist that you only get two goes at repairing this – The first go sometimes fails and comes away again second go is possible because of careful lasering during the first attempt but a third attempt is normally not possible because of laser scarring – My friends retina came away twice and on the third attempt it was part lasered and part surgical sperglued and he now has vision but very blurred – He says the centre vision is very clear but foggy around the edges. And jumping down from his truck is now not an option he walks around like he is on thin ice.

Should he be driving with the problems such as you describe?

I was just going to write about him driving truck when i scrolled down and saw the post from devil..
Should he really be driving a truck it he has 'impaired vision' or even driving at all??
Maybe the answer is yes he can as the surgeon has certified him OK to drive... But it is a valid question I think..

I have asked him this myself and i don't think that it is legal for him to drive but he says he can see OK to drive but cannot jump about in case it comes away again as it cannot be repaired a fourth time --- This is one of those medical loopholes - I know someone who suddenly out of the blue started having epileptic fits and his Doctor banned him from driving and notified Swansea of his condition and he had to surrender his licence - He has been told that he has to be stable on his medication with no fits for twelve months before the doctor will even consider allowing him his licence back yet this did not happen with the detached retina.

My next door neighbour (in the UK) woke up one morning in February with this. He had the operation about 4 days later and his full vision returned by about Easter. I believe he had some gas in his eye keeping pressure on his retina whilst it healed and his vision returned gradually as this dissipated. He was initially frustrated by not being able to drive but then by the end of March we were locked down anyway.
