Yes dates rather dotted around but from May21st all restrictions of movement are lifted and outside only catering establishments re-open with “Hygiene “ rules which must be social distancing and very much. Improved cleanliness . Would seem until then 2 people plus children can at least go out walking etc .
Interesting that unlike most other lifting plans around the world ( other than Greece) this one has nothing about over 60s , vulnerable people etc it seems more a dash to be ready for tourists to arrive in early July . Let’s hope it doesn’t end in tears . A ramp up of cases can quickly flood the limited medical sources here and we are back to square one.
The North hasn’t had a new case for 11 days but is still maintaining a lockdown whereas Greece like here has said it is determined to get an early jump on attracting tourists. Quite where the tourists are coming from I’m not sure. Most opinion polls in countries that provide the lions share of tourists To Cyprus, except Russia , are very warily of lifting restrictions too early in their own country let alone getting on an aircraft from a crowded airport and heading off on holiday in July . SouthWest Airlines the massive low cost carrier in the States from which both EasyJet and Ryanair were born have said social distancing on the low cost low fare carrier model is only possible for a maximum of 4 months as air travel grows then it has to be back to full aircraft or the model collapses .

I have often stated that " see what Greece does, then copy n paste for Cyprus".
Germany came out of lockdown two weeks ago and is now considering restating it as the virus is spreading again. They estimate that if the RO gets to 1.2 it will overrun the health system.

Dentists are warning of higher charges once unlocking happens. I wonder how their precautions will also be applied to visiting doctors and consultants?

On the subject of dentists, we were due a checkup a few days ago and the dentist rang to see if we were happy to go or wanted to change. I was a bit surprised they were open but they said they were open for emergencies, makes sense, and for patients who wanted to continue with their appointments as they were following the criteria for safety and distancing. Seemed a bit odd to me that it’s ok to have someone 30cm from your mouth but not have someone cut your hair. Even stranger when the announcement last night said dentists can reopen. As they say, we live in strange times!

I couldn't see any mention of when airports would reopen & hotels, for all the thousands who will take the risk of travelling here.

So people can go swimming (in the sea I presume) but not the beach, to sunbathe I also presume.

Does the SMS still give you a 3 hour window? So now folk can go out for 9 hours; really??

Hotels are in phase 3:

Phase 3: June 9 – July 13

–              Malls

–              Airports/airlines gradually and conditionally

–              Ports, cruise ship servicing

–              Restaurants, service in closed and open areas

–              Hotels

–              Beaches, on condition that safety distance will be kept

–              Open air cinemas and theatres

–              Gyms

–              Sporting leagues without spectators

–              University summer classes

So, we can go the Beach to swim but we can’t sit on a towel or sunbed to dry off. We can stand there or sit there all day fishing but we can’t use the beach....could this be anymore confusing?

I'm sure we could all find gaps and inconsistencies if we try hard enough. Nevertheless, I think the Cyprus government have done a really good job and deserve considerable praise.

I too think the government have done a great job and I wasn’t trying to pick holes but it does seem ambiguous. I’ll just go to Sports Direct and buy a cheap fishing rod and sit there 🤪

Completely agree Josef, very happy to be here rather than U.K., apart from the worry about my Mum of course.

Perhaps some of the inconsistencies are down to the translation from Greek? 1 wonder if we can walk in ones or twosomes on a beach while on a walk along the coastal path? I live close to the coast, but it seemed just too far away to walk from home, now I wonder if I can drive down there and park the car and go for a walk from next Monday?

I do think that the Govt has managed the lock down very well here, in contrast to the way its been handled in the UK.

Let's just hope that we don't throw away the advantage that this country has by complying with the 'rules' by not following the new ones. Personally the new regime will not change the way of life that we have got used to over the last three months.

https://in-cyprus.philenews.com/35-4-of ... QBBbmCfB8I

As of April 28th, 20 deaths were reported in Cyprus (Case Fatality Rate – CFR: 2.4%).

The mortality rate for COVID-19 is 2.3 per 100,000 population.

Sixteen deaths (80.0%) occurred in men and four (20.0%) in women; the median age of all deaths was 76 years (IQR: 67-79 years). Six deaths were reported among residents in Larnaka and in Pafos, each, three in Nicosia and Ammochostos, each, and two in Limassol (Appendix Table A3).

The median time from date of sampling to death was 7 days (IQR: 3.5-15.0 days).

Figure A3 shows the Kaplan-Meier curve of the time from date of sampling to death.

For 15 deaths, COVID-19 was the underlying cause of death (COVID-19 CFR: 1.8%).

Not true it seems: https://uk.news.yahoo.com/coronavirus-g ... 57903.html
Earlier in the day the BBC were saying that the German Government may well look at the measures again as the infection started to rise. Apparently they have decided to go the other way in small steps. Their RO rate is quite similar to that of the UK at this time between 0.7-0.9 and they feared that if it continued to rise it would result in cancelling the relaxation. Obviously, my mistake was to listen to the terrible BBC.

Will supermarkets still be applying the dedicated early access for elderly & vulnerable people? If not, then that worries me!

Happy in Cyprus wrote: Fri May 01, 2020 2:40 am That's all very well if you're retired on a pension, but while we have got by OK, there will be thousands of business owners out there who are pretty much skint, and desperate to be allowed to open for business.
Aside from that, while most of us have been content to visit a supermarket only occasionally, there is more to life than than the once a week visit to a supermarket. I for one can't wait for the small shops to open for all kinds of things we need, meet up with family in due course and resume life as we know it. Being imprisoned in one's home 24/7 pales after a while.
I did say it was a personal decision which we would follow at least until the statistics tell me that the number of infections has reached zero over a long period. All I am concerned is that there is no second wave caused by irresponsible behaviour following a relaxation of the 'lockdown'.

Regarding the financial situation that you mention, recent information (after my initial post) allows businesses to open under certain conditions, a lot of which mirror the present advice regarding washing of hands, distancing etc. and hopefully this will alleviate the problems of the business owners upon which you put so much importance.

I am a bit disappointed that you appear, at the beginning of your post, to be a little dismissive of those in receipt of a pension. Don't forget that the majority of such people will likely fall into the category of high risk of not surviving a covid-19 infection. They will not be able to socialise much, will they?

Exactly. However, I´d like to see them allow euthanasia for those who opt for it. I´d rather be allowed to fall permanently asleep in comfort - even if it means I´ll pass away a few weeks or months earlier - than have to suffer from pain and the feeling of suffocation to the end. That´s a debate I´m missing in the context of coronavirus. That they don´t allow euthanasia in Cyprus was enough reason for my mother to return to Germany at the end of her life in late 2018. And I´d like to do the same should I become severely ill. That I can´t do that because the airports are closed is a real concern for me.

Any second wave will likely happen once international travel resumes in earnest. That's when things will get interesting, for want of a better word.
