But I for one prefer to have a monarch to having to depend on politicians and a president, who can change every few years. I see no one in the current government who would fit the bill to become President!

I see a President as a non political figure to represent the country at home and abroad, more of a PR figure, and it doesn't have to be a politician.

The estimated total annual cost of the monarchy is £345m per annum. As to the "countless millions" mentioned by Chaddy above, I assume this is thought to be due to the tourism they generate. The claim that the royal family are good for tourism is untrue. Even VisitBritain, the national tourist agency, can't find any evidence for it.
Chester Zoo, Stonehenge and the Roman Baths are all more successful tourist attractions than Windsor Castle, which is the only occupied royal residence to attract visitors in large numbers. If Windsor Castle was included in the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions list of top attractions it would come in at number 24.
The fact is, the royal family don't generate much income for the UK at all.

Josef, i spend a lot of time in America and on almost every occasion when I meet some one new,the subject we seem to get on to is the royal family ( and the Beatles of course ).They say how proud we must be of our royalty and wish they had one of their own..If I mentioned (and I certainly would not ) that I think our royalty are not necessary and cost us to much money ( as been mentioned on here ) they would have me certified under their mental health act.

I presume then by your logic, that before they were German they were Scottish and before that, Welsh and before that, Norman French?
How it worked was, the biggest murdering scam bag, murdered who ever was king at the time, until the next murderiing scum bag came along, and got rid of them, even murdering innocent little children in the tower, fast forward we have european cousins starting wars to hang on to power, causing the deaths of millions, no mate this mob should be put into the dustbin of history, just like their European cousins have been .
It would seem that your grasp of history is as paltry as your view on this. I presume you refer to the Kaiser in 1914 starting a war to hold onto power? He was in no political position to start a war being himself a constitutional Monarch plus it was actually the Austrian Empire that initiated the conflict.
I certainly do not doff my cap nor bow and I think you will find that they do not require this deference any more. I suspect, however, that you still travel under the protection of their Government and enjoy the privileges that come with being one of their citizens.
Ticking away, the moments that make up a dull day.

Why aren't they coming to Pafos?

Too many calls of "Andrew and Harry"?

I don't doubt you for a minute. Americans do have a fascination for the royal family. In fact they have already had two. The British one they rejected and wrote a constitution that prevents one in the future. The other being in the state of Hawaii, that was overthrown by the USA in the 19th century. President Clinton did apologise for this during his time in office.

I think the American fascination with them is all part of their fascination with celebrity. I imagine they see the queen as some distant member of the Kardashian family.

France makes more in tourism from access to it’s Royal Palaces than the UK does... just saying like... ;)
