I've just read this again and had a thought!!
Has anyone ever seen supermarket trollies getting their
handles cleaned/disinfected, considering the amount of times each trolly gets
handled per day.

Not much point in cleaning the trolley, unless its cleaned after each individual use

You can always use antibacterial wipes to clean the surface prior to use.
