But Cyprus most probably has the highest consumption of bottled water.

Typical DM pseudo-science. Look at the title of the 'table': "TOP 5 COUNTRIES WITH THE HIGHEST % OF BLADDER CANCER CASES LINKED TO TAP WATER".
How can they 'link' it to tap water? By the quantity of CHCl3? As this is volatile and the water is stored in sunlight in roof-top tanks before reaching the tap, I suggest that the high rate of bladder cancer here is because of other factors than the water actually coming out of the tap. In any case, if boiled, the CHCl3 will have evaporated.

In any case, the table is highly misleading and unscientific, as it gives ONLY the % attributed to water contaminants, NOT the % of the population with bladder cancer, which may be very low.

When I worked for North West Water they had a programme of shutting down treatment works that received the water from Springs due to concerns over a bug called Cryptosporidium. The number of bottled water companies trying to buy the licenses off NWW was unbelievable, they wanted to bottle the water from the Springs that had been deemed unfit to drink by the government.
I tend to avoid bottled water as its purity is much lower than tap water.

The newspapers and the Daily Mail is a major player in this, are forever initiating scare stories about bottled water including fears about the plastic bottles which it usually comes in. At the end of the day it is down to the individual who or what they believe. Often in summer here I drink one of the well known brands. To date I haven’t come to any harm. The most important thing is to drink sufficient water to stay hydrated. Particularly when its hot.

Morning...all.

Plastic water is a sham, simple as that it not only is causing massive amounts of waste plastic products but no one ever says where it was bottled or sourced, always makes me smile when I see Del and Rodney opening a drinking water factory in their council flat, just to say I have always drank from Cypriot taps and in 25 years of doing so I am still breathing. In the UK I do remember when Chloride was added to the water system and it did taste foul....

Jim is right. Many years ago before there was heavy land contamination, spring water was probably good. Who knows what contaminants it picks up as it traverses its way down from the springs? I myself did a very unscientific test several years ago with my tensor. If you are not into alternative medicines you won't know what it is, but along the lines of a divining stick! Out of 4 bottled waters, it rejected 3 of them. Each to their own, those who want to buy bottled water, and those who don't!

The Kykkos water is bottled in the Troodos. I've been past their plant, while I was looking for an EOKA hideaway.

We drink either Bottled water or Filtered water. In the cold weather, my wife drinks only Hot Boiled water.

I drink at least 3-5 litres (much more in the hotter months) of water a day, mostly unfiltered tap water - no harm done in 15+ years.

Mains drinking water:
1. From desalination: contains very small amount of salt (5-10 ppm), most other contaminants removed, quasi-zero organic matter (at plant output), small amounts of calcium salts generally added, not necessary to chlorinate but small quantities of hypochlorite may be added.
2. From surface reservoirs: variable levels of salts and organic matter, filtered in sand beds, may require other filtering. Organic matter treated with sodium hypochlorite.
3. From phreatic (underground) reservoirs: often rich in calcium salts (hard water), filtered in sand beds, may require other filtering. Organic matter treated with sodium hypochlorite.

The action of the sodium hypochlorite is to destroy living organisms with chlorine, leaving very small quantities of salt. Usually enough is added to kill organisms up to the point of use (tap), but not enough to liberate excess amounts of chlorine at user level. Residing in a rooftop tank will remove excess hypochlorite.

All mains water in Cyprus is regularly analysed and is generally safe to drink from the tap, unless otherwise stated. Beware of non-mains water (wells, etc.). If there has been an interruption of water, run mains water from standpipe for several minutes when restored. Chlorination of mains water is usually sufficient to render water from rooftop tank safe to drink, in normal use, except if kept standing for a month or more.

Wasn't it a well known drinks company that was bottling tap water in the UK and selling it at exorbitant prices?
Bottled water always reminds me of "Only Fools and Horses" and "Peckham Water" which just about sums bottled water up.
We have a water dispenser with a 25ltr. Britas filter which we use during the summer and fill with tap water and use the fridge filtered water which is straight off the main in the cooler months.
