Not just glass. I understand the sun's rays can be refracted through plastic bottles too....

Very true, we had a massive fire on a Sulphur Pad at an oil refinery in Kazakhstan which was caused by Operaters leaving a half empty plastic water bottle on top of the pad.

Nothing to do with Hunters, that is just put out there by anti Hunting posters, someone has been arrested for arson, it would be alot better if people waited to hear some facts before going into '' I heard it down the Pub ''mode, especially where crimes or businesses closing down are concerned.

Yesterday's fire in my valley started in scrub beside a road so may have been caused by a carelessly discarded ciggie, or a bottle refracting the sunlight. On the other hand, members of the fire service have been heard saying that hunters set light to scrub to minimize the habitat available to their prey ...

Sad but true 😢

These are some of the rumours I've heard:

1. Hunters via discarded cigarettes etc
2. Hunters to get animals out of hiding places
3. Big business wanting to build on the land
4. Land owners wanting to sell the land
5. Firemen wanting overtime.
6. Random arsonists
7. Caused by sun reflecting off rubbish etc
8. Farmers burning stubble.
9. Farmers clearing land for new use.

Take your pick. But bear in mind:

1. Fires didn't just occur on hunting days.
2. Theres a fair amount of rubbish out there.
3. Firemen risk their lives to put these fires out.
4. Farmers get the EU subsidy cut if there is a fire on their land

I had forgotten about the farmer reasons. I have added them to the list. Thanks

Whatever the cause, at the end of the day everyone should be aware of the fire risk at present and should act in a responsible way when out in the countryside. So why is it that some people are just downright careless? Anyone who lives here should be aware of the extreme fire risk at the end of a long, scorching summer.
Maybe the downpour earlier this morning may have helped temporarily, but things will dry out again unless there is continual rain here for a few days and the temperature drops significantly.
I hope that anyone found guilty of starting fires is taken to court and is forced to pay for his/her misdeed.

I also hope that all like minded people will have signed the petition to protect the Akamas which Dominic posted on another thread.
