The poppy

Why Scottish Remembrance Day poppy is different from rest of the UK

The Scottish design has four petals compared to the design used in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which has two petals and a leaf.

Remembrance Day takes place on Saturday and people across the country will hold a minute's silence to honour those who died fighting for their country.

It is 99 years since the guns fell silent on the Western Front as World War 1 hostilities formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" in 1918, with the tradition of wearing a poppy growing out of the brutal conflict.

The symbolic gesture, inspired by Lt Colonel John McCrae’s poem, In Flanders Fields, still endures, with people adorning the poppy on their lapels.

But the sharp-eyed among you may have noticed the Scottish poppy is different from those in the rest of the UK.

The Scottish poppy is represented by four petals, with a green stalk, while the English one has two petals and a green leaf.

So how did it come to pass that Scotland ended up with a different poppy to those in England, Wales and Northern Ireland?

According to Poppy Scotland , it emerged from a supply and demand issue - as well as the fact the English version was "botanically incorrect".

The first poppy appeal took place in 1921 with poppies imported from France. The following year, Earl Haig, who had been Commander of the British Forces in the war, established the first Poppy Factory.

It had a practical appeal as well as one of remembrance, as it was designed to support the needs of injured veterans and their families affected by the conflict.

Based in Richmond in Surrey, the high demand for the poppies was such that few were making it north of the border.

Four years later in 1926 his wife, Lady Haig, established a poppy factory in Edinburgh to make poppies exclusively for Scotland.

Poppy Scotland says that it was at this point that Lady Haig also designed a slightly different style of poppy for sale north of the border, opting for four petals rather than two.

Their website states: "Apart from being botanically incorrect, to put a leaf on each poppy would cost approximately £15,000 – money we feel is better spent on providing support to the Armed Forces community."

The poppy was adopted as the flower of remembrance, because in Flanders the poppy appeared in the fields where the fighting had previously taken place as poppies grow well on ground that was disturbed. So the red of the petals is presumably symbolic of the blood which was shed..

If that was the case the one in MM's picture would have to be worn back to front, surely?
