Paphos Winter Tourism hit by Thomas Cook collapse

Post by galexinda »

While winter tourism has been picking up over the past few years, Paphos seems to be going into lockdown as 68 out of 106 hotels are to close.
Last winter season just 37 hotels had closed, an indication of Paphos’ tourism being dependent on the UK market.

Meanwhile, a majority of Limassol hotels will remain open, with their number increased significantly.
According to data presented by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, 46 out the town’s 60 hotels will remain operational, while last season saw only 34 out of 59 keeping their doors open.

In the Famagusta region most of the hotels usually close for the winter but a few more are staying open this year -- 20 out 182, six more than last season’s 14 out of 175.

Larnaca also has an increase as 34 out of 45 hotels will be operational compared to 29 out of 43 during the winter season of 2018-2019.

I suppose that the winter tourist season in Paphos is more likely to suffer a downturn in numbers given the collapse of a major UK tour operator, than say Limassol. Limassol is not only dependent on tourism as it has a thriving financial , business and commercial sector and hosts conferences and symposiums and so on which bring more travellers to the town.
Which begs the question as to how many more hotels and apartments for holiday rental the Paphos area needs?

Cyprus tourism should concentrate more on the travellers rather than tourists out of season there is so much to see in and around the Paphos region

There was another article in the press, explaining that a lot of hotels are undergoing renovations and upgrades in Winter, the only time they can do it..

"Despite winter closures, around 12,000 tourist beds in Paphos will remain available to accommodate 250,000 visitors between December and March, according to the Paphos regional board of tourism.

“The Paphos district will have several thousand full-service beds available and will offer a wide range of accommodation with the capacity to accommodate tens of thousands of visitors in the winter of December 2019 – March 2020,” a regional board of tourism spokesman announced.

A preliminary survey completed by the Paphos regional board of tourism in collaboration with members of the Paphos Hoteliers Association, union Stek and other individual hoteliers found that around 12,000 beds will be in full operation for the winter months – mostly between December and March.

He added that the 12,000 beds available include all categories of accommodation and that most units that are suspending operation are undergoing upgrades and renovations.

“Most suspensions are limited to the months of December through to February,”

Thomas Cook didn't operate a winter service to Paphos. April/May to October was their timetable. Very poor journalism, if the headline is incorrect the rest of the story loses all credibility for me.

Agree with panoscouse, Thomas Cook did not fly in the winter, which makes easyJet and Ryanair's November prices absolutely scandalous. They are just cashing in on TC's demise, for no good reason. Paphos does need to change it's tourist offering though. Quality over quantity in the winter - so much to offer here, the weather being just one.

You are exactly right Lucky Lady. Quality over quantity, but not only in Winter. That why I always thought the luxury project on church land near the beach in Yeroskipou district with artificial island etc would go in that direction. Too many years wasted already there as well as the planned marina at Potima Bay towards Peyia. Shakira and friends are the type of people the tourist business should concentrate, instead of all inclusive tourism...
