It depends on what you are saying
Either they are (they're) dropping like flies or there dropping like flies (inferring the place where they are dropping like flies). Spell checks are limited in their ability to make such differential judgements.

Yes, basic spelling and punctuation creates a much better impression, even if that takes a minute or so longer! Anyway using spell checker makes correct spelling much easier,,
I blame over reliance on computer or tablet partly for the decline in written English.

Plus that kind of misspellings makes it difficult to read - especially if you´re not a native speaker. It makes me "stumble" while reading. Annoying!

True - but the average spell checker does not check grammar. So if you type the wrong there/their/they're or sight/site or any other such difficulties, it will pass the spell check. It will also pass the spell check if you type "if" instead of "it" or "of" instead of "off" or "have".

If you are puzzled by my latter example, how about somebody writing "he should of done ..." instead of "he should have done" ... Lazy pronunciation becoming incorrect grammar not picked up in a spell check.

Spell checks are good, but limited, and can frequently lead to US rather than UK spelling. I prefer to read through and check my spelling if necessary (I have always found principal and principle tricky). 😀

Sorry for thread creep!

I think these days, there is a lot more leeway with spelling and punctuation than we were subjected to. To a degree I agree subject matter is the more important
Yes, but ...
I am reminded of a little grammar book called "Eats shoots and leaves" with a photo of a panda, doing exactly that. Eating bamboo shoots and bamboo leaves.
However, if you then take the same words and punctuate them, the sentence becomes "Eats, shoots, and leaves." Somewhat different scenario.
Punctuation is important because it clarifies the meaning of the sentence or phrase.

The English language and spelling has changed over 100s of years. We are in an era that texting makes you lazy and the English language will change again. I don't get the acronyms the kids use. As we develop the language will change and so will grammar to adjust to this.

Life changes and no disrespect to older members of the forum yes it is hard as you were taught well at school but its a different world.

Not everyone can spell correctly or for that matter could be dislexic. So as long as the message gets across I think it is OK.
