Gardening advice, please?

Post by Kili01 »

Hi All,

I have just planted some new plants. But cats are using this bed as a toilet and digging it up. They are not my cats. Please can someone suggest what can be done to prevent or discourage cats from this smelly, unhygienic behaviour, before they wreck the plants?

Suggestions welcome, please?

Spread thorny branches around the plants.

I got some large sharp stones and put them around all my plants. It actually made them more attractive- The cats do not go there anymore.

We put down metal mesh around the plants. They leave it alone. Long lasting. You do have to pickle out the weeds in between though! Available at all DIY by the meter.

Lemon peel usually does the trick.

Tonight I have crisscrossed bamboo canes all around the new plants and am hoping for the best.
Someone has told me that Home Market sell cat pellets which apparently, I’m told will put cats off going there! Has anyone heard of these and do they work?
Thanks for all replies. Just trying to decide what to do next.

They do not work, so try the Chili powder.

Orange peel. I believe cats do not like citrus. . . . So, I agree with Jamboal.

As far as I am aware, if you can reach it from the roadside, you can help yourself. Although I don't believe there is a law of trespass in Cyprus (unless actual damage has been caused), it is not a good idea to enter a field and effectively steal a farmer's livelihood!

Those who do not like cats, must have been mice in a former life!

Had the same problem, go to Smart Supermarket and get a large container of ground black pepper, scatter it around plants, of course when the rain comes you have to do it again. Regards Dimsum p.s check which way wind is blowing or you will be sneezing like me for hours

Vinegar worked for me. The big bottles of local stuff.

I’ve laced my flowerbed with chilli and garlic powder. It smells like an Indian takeaway..hope it repels the cats!! Time will tell..
