Do the different sequences of the church bells
mean different happenings etc?

Does anyone know the meaning of the different
sequences?

If you mean church bells in Cyprus, they aren’t melodious as they can be in the UK when churches have 4,6 or even 12 bells and can ring a ‘peal’ of bells. Most villages here seem to have a single bell which can sound ‘tinny’.
My local village church seems to have one bell. It bangs or clangs and can be rung slowly or fast.. During the last 5 mins before a church service it is rung bang, bang, bang getting faster to encourage anyone coming to hurry up!

I used to love to sound of church bells in the UK.
Unfortunately, the clang, clang, clang, clang of Cypriot church bells is monotonous and annoying.
Similar to the marching drums on National Days, with boom, boom, boom --- boom, boom boom

I wouldn't call it monotonous. I quite like the sound of the Polemi church bells. It makes me smile as it sets the local dogs off for a good howl for a few minutes.

I’m not surprised at the dogs reaction! As I posted before its not a pleasure to listen to, unlike church bells in the UK which I like listening to- from a distance, preferably!

I can tell the difference between a funeral & a wedding at our nearest church but other than that - haven’t a clue!

There was never any mistaking the funeral bell toll at the 3 churches that surrounded our village when we lived in Ypsonas...

Some of what we hear as bells are actually a recording played via externally mounted loudspeakers, as in Anavargos Square!

In this day and age when virtually everyone either has a smartphone or watch, are they necessary any more?

How can you possibly compare the two,

one bell per church here, probably being pulled by a couple of kids, and the Churches in the UK who have a team of trained bell ringers

Church bells traditionally served multiple purposes - calling the faithful to prayer (as in Angelus), ringing the hour etc. warning of impending doom - invaders, joyous rings at celebrations, funeral tolls etc. The melodious bells of England were probably a display of wealth....

Many of the melodious bells of England have sadly been silenced, by people who choose to live near a church, and are usually from another area, who then complain about them.
