Is Your British Passport Still Valid ?

Post by Alewfin »

This is from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website.

'The rules for travel to most countries in Europe will change if there’s a no-deal Brexit. If your adult passport was issued over 9 years ago, you may be affected. You should use this tool to check your passport is still valid for your trip before booking travel.'

You can check when your Passport now expires. It isn't the date in your Passport. If your passport was issued 9 or more years ago it is only valid till the end of this year.

Click on Travel Advice then choose an EU country (Cyprus for example) then Entry Requirements.

which takes you to here

which tells me that my passport (which expires in Feb 2020)

<<Your passport won't be valid for travel to Europe after 31 October 2019

(if the UK leaves the EU without a deal)>>

Mine's perfectly fine for our travel next year even though it expires in June and we're going on holiday in March.
But.... we're not going to Europe 😉
Currently we're going to Tunisia with Thomas Cook but that may all change tomorrow morning if we find out the company has gone into Administration.
If that's the case - it's Plan B and back to Egypt to scatter a very dear friends' ashes at hers and our favourite temple on the outskirts of Aswan.
Passport will still be good to go.

Thanks for the direct link.

I wonder whether the Yellowhammer reports on the governments contingency plans for a no deal Brexit include having to renew millions of passports and also having to inform all the immigration departments in all EU countries that the expiry dates on all British passports are wrong.

It has been known for some time that your passport should have at least 3 months ‘usage’ left on it, come 1st November.... but known by whom?

The FCO have been saying 6 months validity for Europe if there's a no deal Brexit.

Looks like we're off to Egypt now. No new passport for me yet. I'm hanging onto my red one as long as possible 😉

So, next query, slightly related to the above.

If we are on holiday in CY at Brexit day with our UK driving license - will my license still be valid or do I need something else???

I would get an International Drivers Licence permite from the Post Office first. Only cost a fiver and they do them on the spot.

Just a little update

Concerned that my passport would not have 3 months left on it post brexit, I went to our local Post Office on Monday morning about 11am and used their 'Digital Check and Send service'
I gave the lady my passport.
She ushered me into the photo booth and took my photo
Took my mobile number and email address.

As I walked down the street outside I had a confirmation text

The passport arrived by special delivery about 09.30 on Thursday!

:)

Now for the International Driving Permit!

Happy in Cyprus wrote: Mon Oct 07, 2019 12:41 am FWIW JB, you can take a passport photo yourself with a mobile phone, subject to the guidelines issued by the Passport Office. There is an online assessment facility, which allows you to submit the photo you have taken and you get an immediate decision as to whether the photo is acceptable.
Any clues as to where I can find a link to that?
