If it was your phone in the UK, you call your old provider and they unlock it for you. Provided you completed all contractual obligations and paid all your bills it's free.

If your going to buy a phone in the uk go to carphone warehouse, there not tied to a network and the phones are not locked.
I was told this in there shop in Sunderland.

As others have said, get the UK locking network to unlock it for you, probably for free or a small fee, but the most reliable.

Maybe look on E Bay?

Some 'unofficial' methods have been known to re-lock.

Gadget House on Butcher Boy Road aka Suicide Alley or as previously stated by your network provider if it is the SIM network locked to make it SIM free however if it is locked due to wrong password then that is a different matter and you need to connect ITunes and go through the unlocking process using Icloud and your registered email ID. Look up youtube lots of videos with step by step instructions.
