Under the circumstances, I half expected the last night of the Proms to be a little bit of a washout. I was wrong! It is true that the traditional part towards the end was a little bit curtailed but it was nevertheless performed with the limited means of a small orchestra and choir – and no audience to chime in – with vigour and life.
Before that there was a magnificent rendering of Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending by Nicola Benedetti, who was a last-minute replacement.
Well done, the BBC has once again shown that it can overcome the problems of the day with joy and pleasure for many.
