Theresa May, time to step down?

Post by Jimgward »

I actually admire her courage In Taking on the job from Cameron, to deliver Brexit, when she didn’t believe in it.

However, she seriously underestimated the country in calling an election. She seriously underestimated the Extreme right in her party and the effect doing a dirty deal with the DUP would have. She underestimated the part labour could play, if she could get them on board.

As a result, we have a shambles ongoing. She also looks like death warmed up and it is obviously affecting her health. Is it worth it for her personally?

Mind you, her front bench also look like Lords of the Sith

I am not a Brexiteer, and wanted the UK to stay in Europe, but I am a Democrat, and if the will of the people is not carried out, then the UK will forever be laughed at, everytime Democracy is mentioned.

Understatement of the year. It amazes me how stubborn, stupid and single-minded she can be in her treacherous efforts to make the nation degenerate from a reasonable first world entity to little more than the globe's laughing stock.

I heard from an old friend who works in the civil service at Westminster (not an important one) that the civil servants have lost faith in her, as she apparently is so single-minded and won't listen to advice from any side

She simply has not had the support she needed, and flip flopping like a wet fish is not her way, she was handed a poisoned chalice and has tried her best. With the current state of affairs in Parliament today nobody could have done any better, but many could have done a lot worse.

May made mistakes from day 1;

She believed her helpers and called an election, despite saying categorically she wouldn't

She believed Fox that countries would queue up to do deals with us....

She believed picking Davis to negotiate, as an ardent Brexiteer, would deliver a deal - Davis didn't want any deal and lied to parliament before going

She insisted on alienating Labour and saying Brexit was purely a Government negotiation - a wise person keeps their enemies close

She didn't effectively deal with Johnson and Mogg - in fact, she gave them space

She alienated her core within the party

She did the dirty deal with the DUP

She created ALL of the deal with the EU and got them to agree to it - i.e. the Backstop was her creation - then she has failed to have backing from her cabinet, never mind her party

She has refused to bend her red lines - likely because she is tied in knots by the deals with the DUP and her hard right

She has ignored the business community and their views

She has said "no deal is better than a bad deal" - but never meant it

She has, like most Tory leaders before her, allowed the media and parliament to compare the EU to a Franco-Prussian monster - even her foreign secretary, Hunt, compare the EU to the Soviet Union

She has ignored the Regions - alienating ANY chance of support from Scotland or Wales

Her secrecy over the negotiations alienated all sides - plus her portrayal of the EU as 'bullies" when it was her engineered deal, was loathsome

Actually delivered a Brexit that met the Job Title, rather than some watered down flimsy half baked agreement keeping the UK tied to the EUs apron skins or indeed crashing out completely... I am intrigued.
Anyone who was totally in favour of Brexit, In my opinion May was never 100% for it, thus Im quite sure, she won't be heartbroken if the UK remains in.

Hudswell wrote: Wed Mar 13, 2019 2:18 pm The EU is a Franco Prussian Federalist monster intent on creating a Federalist State which the the UK intends to leave, your point is? And your suggested leader is? And a plan that would unite parliament and the country, meeting the key aim of Brexit, leave the EU, not some soft Norwegian like option keeping us tied to it without a say? And yes the EU are bullies, their only aim is to punish the UK for having the temerity to leave its loathsome organisation and deter any other nation for doing the same thing.
I thought I had made my point, May deep down isnt bothered, if the UK remains,

And you forgot to mention how much her mistakes have cost the country and continue to do so. Certainly more than £1bn and it goes on with gifts to those who 'deserve' it to buy votes. If she were the CEO of a company, her behaviour would have landed her in clink, long ago.

It is this notion that the EU is a monster, that has always worked against us. We have been behind more laws within the EU than any other state. We were always one of the most powerful parts of the EU, but the media and the right in the UK just would never see it as anything other than a monster.

No credit for the good it has done. Lies constantly told, like bendy bananas, like Turkey being brought into the EU, like a Federalist army... all lies. None of these things were ever going to happen, but our red-tops (and broadsheets) in the UK live on lies. And the cap-doffing majority in the UK buy into it - as the 5% thrive on their austerity, their suspicions and their insecurities.

I am so glad I am no lover of the right or the left. I await the Democratic party that inevitably will be created out of this shambles.

Some people muted Turkey joining, Some have muted a EU army. No support for the notions - ever. Turkey was never joining, despite the UK being the one proposing it. Germany would never have had Turkey as a member - the benefit of differing views and the majority deciding.

Grand socialist Utopia. I think you've been sniffing the cordite again.

I haven't heard much, if any, support of Corbyn on here..... I think May needs to step down and to be honest, I don't know who should replace her in the Conservatives. I haven't much faith in any front bench politicians of any party

I was an IT [Ee]ngineer, senior technical consultant, for a global contracting company for about 15 years. I worked on public and private sector system development concurrently, trust me most of the senior civil servants, past and present, will join her then, the waste was ridiculous and the systems implemented in ridiculous ways. Emulating old paper systems, even had to get in one of the software houses to rewrite their software to print out stuff half way through for manual processing and filing, Yes, Minister didn't go far enough.
Professor Varoufakis said Parsimony, not austerity. Parsimony in the support services would free up god knows how much for the front line. All the front lines from what I have seen. Dickens called it the Circumlocution Office, I agree with him.

My MP informs me that he is to vote for the Malthouse Compromise, after reading what this entails, I see that he is doing the best he can to deliver Brexit, albeit two months late, we shall see.

Sorry but Mrs. May has to go.

I actually think we might be moving into an era of no majority governments, with more than 4 parties. A bit like germany and many other countries, where voting on each bill might be a decision for the time, and not to simply oppose the controlling party.

I am totally fed up with our form of government, the two-party situation with Whip voting and antiquated rules. Scrap the non-elected house. Have innovation over voting and rules to speed up processes. Join the 21st century. Brexit has shown the disconnect between government and the people.

We also shouldn't assume that anyone speaks for the majority. Farage does that. He has no remit and is a dinosaur. He also was treasonous today in the EU parliament, imploring them to refuse any extension to the process. Trying to force a hard-brexit for his own means.
