Brexit outreach events to be held in Paphos

The British High Commissioner and other consular staff will be in Paphos on Tuesday as part of a series of Brexit outreach meetings taking place across the island.

The aim of this initiative is to ensure that British citizens living in Cyprus have the best possible updates on Brexit and the impact it may have on their daily lives on the island, a British High Commission spokesperson told the Cyprus Mail.

“We want to thank the Cypriot authorities for their cooperation, especially the Civil Registry and Migration department, which have been represented in our outreach events so far,” he added.

British High Commissioner Stephen Lillie has already hosted three outreach events for expats in Cyprus over the last two weeks, taking place in Oroklini, Paralimni and Limassol.

Lillie will host two more in Paphos on Tuesday, the first in Peyia and a second in Paphos town. These will be followed by a similar event in Nicosia on December 3 and a further one in Pissouri on December 10.

The High Commissioner has also been responding to questions on Brexit via a weekly column in the Sunday Mail.

Tuesday’s first meeting will be at Peyia Old Cinema building at 2pm, while the second will be held at Palia Ilektriki Cultural Centre in Paphos old town at 5.30pm.

Earlier in the day, the High Commissioner will be a guest on the Rock FM Breakfast Show at 11am, where he will be answering listeners’ questions regarding Brexit.

“We are inviting people to email us with any worries, concerns or points that they feel need to be clarified about Brexit and how it will affect their lives and the High Commissioner will answer them live on air on Tuesday November 27,” a spokesman for the radio station said.

So far, hundreds of British residents have tuned up at the outreach events which are open to all British nationals and no registration is required.

The High Commission said the Civil Registry and Migration department has published detailed guidance for British expats on how they can normalise their status in Cyprus.

“We strongly urge British citizens to follow these instructions, and we hope to see more of them in our upcoming outreach events which offer an opportunity to update on latest developments, including the extraordinary EU Summit of the 25th of November and the next steps,” the High Commission spokesman said.

Lillie previously said to enjoy the rights and privileges accorded by the Citizen’s Rights agreement, Brits in Cyprus need to apply for an MEU1 or MEU3 (if the applicant has lived in Cyprus for more than five years) before the end of December 2020.

The migration department has said that holders of an MEU3 will face a straightforward process for obtaining a new residency document issued by the Cypriot authorities after January 1, 2021.
