Re: Robert Peston view on Brexit
My thoughts are these (from a position of no inside knowledge). May will agree to a customs union. Her party will revolt leading to a general election. Labour will win. The customs union will remain. OR The UK population will get so fed up that another referendum will be held and the UK will remain ...

Re: Cyprus residency - again
You may be interested in a significant difference between MEU2 and MEU3 for non-EU spouses of EU citizens. If they are on an MEU2 (their equivalent of the MEU1) then they can only leave Cyprus for a maximum 90 days in one stint. Any longer and the MEU2 lapses and they have to start all over again at...

Re: Paphos-Polis highway to be completed by 2021
I think the black line is the new road, not the red existing one. They don't meet until Polis. It will be handy for anyone coming from the east, but anyone in, say, Emba, Kissonerga, or thereabouts wont join until north of Tsada by the looks of it. So we still get the hill.

Re: Cyprus hosted secret US helicopter base for four years, "no comment" says govt
The article indicates that the US copters were in the British base. Therefore it was Britain who hosted a secret US base, not the Republic of Cyprus.

Re: Brexit Update
I won't be celebrating when the UK leaves Europe. I think it will be a terrible day which future generations will regret, and blame the older generation for. In truth, they should shoulder some of the blame themselves; had they voted in greater numbers, this wouldn't have happened. I agree. My refe...

Re: Brexit Update
Yes, thanks for the info.
However, I am haunted by the words "nothing is agreed until everything is agreed", so don't feel able to celebrate just yet.

Re: Cyprus NHS
I think Flyer is right. Using the tax return is an obvious way of collecting the money. What it would mean is that all expats here would complete a return rather than just those who earn over the tax limit or remain taxed in the UK. It would have the added benefit of gathering some tax from those wh...

Re: Amazon warning.
If like me you use Amazon to buy products not usually available on Cyprus and if you do not already know this, I have been caught out twice now ordering items from Amazon UK, the sellers are not always in the UK, and some items are sent from Asia, if that happens you will normally have to pay Custo...

Re: Defendant denies premeditated murder in Peyia hit and run
It did until recently, when they introduced a parole system. Assuming someone didn't get parole, then they would indeed be in for life. There was a chap recently who got parole after serving 31 years for murder.

Well he would wouldn't he. If he is found guilty then it's mandatory life imprisonment, so he may as well plead not guilty.

Re: The teaching profession is being derailed
I agree with the comments regarding the standards of teachers in Cyprus. many of those same teachers run (illegal) afternoon teaching sessions for cash, to compensate for the poor education given in the mornings. Another problem with pre-university education in Cyprus is the position of the church....

Re: National Anthems
I am not a fan of God Save the Queen. Firstly, it is one of the few anthems that are about an individual rather than a country, which seems to be wrong. Secondly, the anti Scottish verses still exist, although they are not used. Isn't it time for a new one? I like the idea of Days. But can't forget ...
