Re: Retirement in Paphos
I'm sorry, but neither a High Commissioner nor independent willwriter are best-placed to give advice on country of domicile with regard to UK IHT liability. If I wanted advice I would go to a qualified and experienced probate lawyer in Cyprus who is familiar with both UK and Cyprus inheritance laws...

Re: Retirement in Paphos
re Alewfin's point above..a couple of useful links: https://www.greenwoods.co.uk/knowledge-base/private-client/domicile-and-inheritance-tax/ I wonder, for those who have come here "for good" and "cut all ties with UK", what is the effect of having a will (or a codicil to a will)...

MP3 Replacement
I have a much loved and used Creative Zen MP3 player but my laptop can no longer identify it and thus can no longer transfer music to it. I have spoken to Creative and they no longer make Zens and no longer support older versions, such as mine. Can anyone recommend a suitable replacement, but not Ap...

Re: Retirement in Paphos
One thing to bear in mind if you own a property in the UK, is that it will necessarily render you subject to UK intestacy laws, which in turn may affect the tax due on your estate when you leave this mortal coil. Do you mean IHT ? If so, HMRC knows know boundaries, if you are a UK citizen, and will...

Re: Retirement in Paphos
Don't give up your UK Sterling bank account. Its extremely difficult, almost impossible, to open a new one when a permanent resident of Cyprus. Don't give up your UK Credit Cards. Cyprus banks don't function the same with regard to credit cards like the UK. They are more restrictive. Unless your UK...

Re: Retirement in Paphos
Cyprus has a low cost of living and a high quality of life - in my opinion. Most things here are cheaper than in the UK. There are exceptions of course. In comparison to the UK, airfares are extremely expensive but fortunately not a weekly shop. Imported goods are more expensive, especially from the...

Re: Yellow MEU3 form not the older MEU1..
However, any rights acquired by EU citizens in the UK and British citizens in the EU before Brexit will be honoured. Therefore, completing the MEU3 before Brexit secures the right of a British citizen to permanent residence in Cyprus after Brexit. This is an interesting statement. I have not yet be...

Re: Yellow MEU3 form not the older MEU1..
I have now been told this MEU3 form is nothing to do with Brexit but a Cyprus Gov. thing and it will cost each person one hundred euros to get it. Another way of the government to raise some money. It has everything to do with Brexit. At the moment all EU citizens have the right under EU law to res...

Re: Yellow MEU3 form not the older MEU1..
Austin,
The High Commissioner was quite explicit about rights. Any rights acquired before Brexit will remain after Brexit, hence the need for a MEU3. He said it was agreed in the Brexit divorce negotiations.

Re: Yellow MEU3 form not the older MEU1..
The MEU3 gives the right to reside in Cyprus whereas the MEU1 does not. My understanding (and reading between the lines) of what the High Commissioner said at the Kamares Club is that after Brexit the MEU3 provides a right and a protection for a British Expat to reside permanently in Cyprus as the M...

Re: Cyprus EHIC card equivalent.
Although the EHIC is an EU benefit the EU allows member countries to issue them which means that each country applies its own rules and regulations. The UK will issue an EHIC to all British people (and possibly others but I'm not sure about that) who are normally resident in the UK. The UK will issu...

Re: Applying for a yellow slip
We applied for our MEU3 and supplied all the necessary paperwork to the Paphos Immigration Office. We also included a letter kindly written by our village Muktar who confirmed that we had been continuously living in the village for the last 10 years. Whether or not that helped, we don't know, but o...

Re: Applying for a yellow slip
Just an addition that it's not actually a passport you are applying for but naturalisation as a Cypriot Citizen. Once you take citizenship you can then apply for a Cypriot passport if you wished to. Personally I never have as dual nationality is allowed and I choose to use my UK one. I do have a Cy...

Re: Applying for a yellow slip
Allan, Just to confuse things, there are two 'Yellow Slips'. We, like many other British expats have the MEU1 'Yellow Slip' but there is a new 'Yellow Slip' MEU3. The UK High Commission is recommending that all British expats get the MEU3 'Yellow Slip'. However, it's not entirely clear when a Briti...

Re: Tax forms
I spoke to the cashier at Inland Revenue and she confirmed that all Income Tax submissions for 2017 have to be online, but payments can still be paid at the cashier office. I therefore registered for online submission and eventually was provided with a log in and password. I have since logged in but...

TAXISnet Registration Difficulties

Neither my my wife or myself earn (from UK pensions) anywhere near the tax allowance here. I am hoping that the income tax forms will come through the post as usual...
