Re: Ablation of the hip

I guess you mean hip replacement, not just ablation. If it was my hip which needed replacement, I´d consider having it done at a hospital offering robot assisted operations. If what I read about knee replacements is true for hip replacements as well (and I´d suspect most of it is), it will come with...

Are Cyprus banks really cancelling morttgages of Brits?

According to a posting in a German FB group the reason why so many properties in / near Tala have come to the market recently is that Cypriot banks are forcing Brits to sell by cancelling their mortgages as a consequence of Brexit. Is that true? Can they even do that?

Re: Starting school advice - English speaking 4 year old

I can´t comment on Cyprus specifically, but when I left my home country of Germany with my elementary school children for an English speaking country I sent them to English speaking schools and it was amazing how quickly they picked up the language. Sending them to a Montessori school helped a lot a...

Re: Tsada/Olympus Village

First, Olympos village is not that high, it varies between 480 m and 520 m sea level. Are you sure it´s that high? That´s about the elevation of my plot in Polemi which is quite a bit more uphill. You are forgetting you drive downhill from Tsada to get to Polemi. Good point. I wouldn't have thought...

When you choose the applicable law, does that affect taxation as well (there is inheritance tax in my home country)?

This used to be the link to the relevant law: https://www.moi.gov.cy/moi/crmd/crmd.nsf/All/5314ED0D3F68CA9EC2257D2C003A4DC2?OpenDocument . Unfortunately, it´s not working anymore. I don´t know whether that´s because of a technical problem or whether the law isn´t in force anymore. Does anybody know ...

Re: Decision on energy bill hikes go down to the wire

If necessary, I think the EAC should be subsidized in order to be able to upgrade the grid, so it can manage an increase in renewable energy production. That would be money well spent as it will prevent blackouts.

Re: Net Metering App

Express Pete. Next time your app is showing zero production, see if you are exporting anything to the grid. Turn off any appliances that use huge amounts of electric, such as ovens, aircon etc and take an export meter reading. Then, after a couple of hours of zero production on your app, take anoth...

Re: Bravo EAC

Maybe it’s a good thing if essential services aren’t privatised. The situation with Germany’s railway system speaks in favour of that claim. Since privatisation, it has gone downhill. Yes, public services are probably more expensive, but it seems that’s a price worth paying.

Re: Update on crematorium?

Will being cremated mean that you won´t have to be resting on a cemetary (which will come with a cost to my kids)? When my dad died in Germany he was cremated. However, I was not allowed to take his ashes with me, but the urn had to be buried at a cemetery (meanwhile this has changed though). I wond...

Re: Cypriot personal tax system

If you are tax resident here, your pension can be taxed at only 5%. If there is a double taxation agreement between Cyprus and Germany, then Germany should not tax you, as long as Germany agrees you are not tax resident there. That is how it works with the UK. Thanks to souniman for the earlier rep...

Are foreign pensions even taxable in Cyprus? German pensions at least aren't, because they're taxed in Germany according to the agreement for thr avoidance of double taxation.

Re: Masks and mandatory tests following Covid 'outbreak'

The problem with masks is that they have to be worn correctly to be fully effective. And of course you need to use proper masks for full protection. Those you can buy for 10 Cents may offer some protection against infection via droplets but hardly against infection via aerosols. Personally, I'm usin...

They've been proven to be ineffective.
I had hoped that we were past the covid hysteria generally now.
Masks are effective, if and when worn properly and if you use the right ones. Of course, if they're worn around the chin and not sealing tightly, their effectiveness decreases.

Re: education– or lack thereof

These results need to be taken with a spoon of salt. Part of the reason for poor results is that in larger European countries there are many children who don´t speak the local language well as they are refugees. No wonder that their progress in school is hampered by that. Another factor is covid. Co...

Yes that's correct, I remember, it was 18 years ago, they told me if it was a tiled pool the base must be much thicker. We have had earthquakes and none have bothered my pool, the liner had to be changed at 15 years and the new one cost 4000 Euro. It is 10m x 5m. Gary. Do you rember how thick your ...
